The people of the North Pacific coast, especially of British Columbia, must ever be indebted to Captain McNeill for many important events as the result of his long and useful life among the fur-trapers and Indians of the North Pacific Slope. Not only is he associated with the first discovery of the North Pacific coal-fields; the disclosure of Victoria and Esquimalt harbors ; the founding of British Columbia's capital, but also with the first discovery of gold, which a few years later led to the famous Fraser river excitement.
